In November 2008, the Howick Village Association held its inaugural Art, Garden & Sculpture Weekend. This weekend was organised by the Association with support from Howick Village Optometrists, Uxbridge Howick’s Creative Centre, Monterey Art Gallery, the Weekend Gardener magazine and well known New Zealand Artist, Ron Gribble.
Artworks of all shapes, forms and media were on display through the Village in the shops and in the Fencible Walk Park, Uxbridge’s galleries and Monterey Art Gallery. Most of these works were for sale.
The Garden Trail that formed part of this weekend took the public through many beautiful and interesting private gardens, some of which are not open to the public and then on to other places of interest out East.
Due to the success of that weekend, the Howick Village Association is currently organising a much larger event to showcase artworks and gardens. This time round, we are calling it eastern artscape and it will be held from the 19th of February to the 25th of February 2010.
The Garden Trail will be held over two days – Friday the 19th and Saturday the 20th of February. Tickets will be keenly priced at $15.00 for one day and $25.00 for two days. We are fortunate this year to have the services of Lois Phillips, Mary Ann France, Trevor Smedley and Jacque Jamieson as our Garden Trail Coordinators and are all well-known and respected gardeners who open their own gardens to the public on a regular basis. These Coordinators are putting together a fabulous garden trail so come and visit the many beautiful and varied gardens, some of which have not been open to the public before, and then moving onto “foodie” places of in.
Uxbridge Howick’s Creative Centre was established in 1981 expressly for the purpose of providing a range of arts services to the community. Starting from a largely voluntary base, it has evolved into the professionally run organisation it is today. The range of services offered include up to 65 art classes a term, yoga and pilates and dance classes for children; exhibitions in two galleries, some curated by Uxbridge with others showing emerging artists work; a range of outdoor and indoor music concerts.
For eastern artscape in February 2010, Uxbridge will be exhibiting Estuary Artworks 2010, 19 Feb – 10 March, opening 18 Feb 6.3-0pm. This mixed media exhibition features finalist works selected for the Estuary Artworks Awards 2010. Estuary Artworks aims to raise the profile of this critical waterway, encouraging community protection from all forms of pollution through exploration of visual arts. Sponsored by ARC, first prize $8,000.
Monterey Art Gallery in Cook Street is a fine art gallery, specialising in paintings and applied arts by renowned New Zealand contemporary artists. Monterey will be showing “A Summer Collection”, a group exhibition. A feast of summer landscapes, Kiwiana and summer beauty.
The Howick Art Group Gallery is in the Hawthorndene Reserve. They will be exhibiting a variety of exceptional original work by their many members.
As well as a variety of sculpture in Fencible Walk, you will be able to watch sculptural work being created around the Howick Information Service in Picton Street.
